The laws of UX, practised instead of memorised

  • 60-30-10 Rule — 60% dominant (neutral), 30% secondary, 10% accent. Ratios create visual calm.
  • Design every state — Loading, empty, error and success each need a deliberate design.
  • Statistical Power — Test duration depends on traffic, baseline rate, and minimum detectable effect.
  • Funnel Triage — Optimize the biggest leak first. Conversion math compounds — fixing 48pt beats fixing 4pt.
  • Accessible contrast — Text needs ≥ 4.5:1 against its background (3:1 for large text / UI).
  • Density Matches Context — Density should match the user's task — consumer apps breathe, pro tools pack.
  • Hick's Law — Decision time grows logarithmically with the number and complexity of choices.
  • Fitts's Law — Time to acquire a target depends on its distance and size. Bigger + closer = faster.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to try it?

You can try one real challenge from the homepage with no signup and no card. To play the rest of the library, create a free account: no card, and the Beginner track stays free. Your streak and XP are saved in the app.

What's free, and what's Pro?

The Beginner track, the full community, and the entire resource library are free, forever. Pro unlocks the Intermediate and Advanced tracks, a full AI review of your work, and your shareable portfolio.

How much time does it take?

About five minutes a day. Each quest is one real product decision — you make the call, learn why it matters, and keep the result.

How can I practice UX design every day?

Make one small, real product decision a day and find out why it was right or wrong. UX Quest turns that into a five-minute habit: you commit to a call on a real screen, get an instant verdict, and see the principle behind it, with XP and a streak to keep you coming back. No portfolio project or design tool needed.

What are the laws of UX?

The laws of UX are research-backed principles about how people perceive, decide and act on interfaces, such as Hick's Law (choices), Fitts's Law (targets), Miller's Law (memory) and the Doherty Threshold (speed). UX Quest explains 40 of them in plain English, each with a real example, common mistakes, and a challenge to practise it.

Can I use UX Quest to build a UX portfolio?

It helps you show your thinking. AI scenarios turn your reasoning into Decision Cards, and Pro adds a shareable portfolio page. It doesn't replace full case studies from real projects, but it gives you concrete proof of how you make design decisions.

I'm new to UX. Is this too advanced?

Not at all. The Beginner track starts from first principles, and every challenge teaches the concept before asking you to apply it. It's built for people growing their instinct from scratch.

What is the AI design mentor?

After a challenge you can rebuild the idea in your own tool and upload a screenshot for feedback. Free gives you structured, principle-based guidance; Pro adds a full AI review of your actual screen. Your screenshot is used only for that one review. We don't store it, and it's never used to train AI models.

Do I need Figma or any design tool?

Not to learn. Every challenge is solved right in your browser. A design tool only comes in for the optional “apply it” step, where you rebuild the idea in your own work and get feedback on it.

What is the AI Trust & Interaction collection?

A quest collection about designing trustworthy AI products: when an assistant should ask, confirm, explain uncertainty, hand control back, or stop. It's the backbone of the path — every stage opens with one. The first two scenarios are free to play, and the rest come with Pro, with new ones added regularly.

Can I cancel if Pro isn't for me?

Yes. Cancel anytime from Settings or Paddle's customer portal, and you keep Pro until the end of the period you already paid for. There's also a 14-day money-back guarantee on your first payment.
